The 50/30/20 rule

A simple starting split: 50% of after-tax income to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings and debt payoff. It's a default, not a law, adjust it to your real fixed costs and goals, the calculator above just shows you where you stand against it.

Emergency fund runway

A common target is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses (your "needs" figure above) held in cash before investing aggressively. At the needs number entered above, that's the emergency fund size worth building first, before chasing yield anywhere else.
